9/11 Art

Student artists from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) channel their talents in a tribute to the heroes of 9/11.  Through a collaborative art project between SLPS and the City of Port St. Lucie, students are helping to beautify the city by painting murals that will be transferred to wraps for traffic utility cabinets throughout the city.  A special 9/11 tribute cabinet created by art students at Lincoln Park Academy will be unveiled at the upcoming remembrance ceremony for 9/11 victims and first responders.  The ceremony, which begins at 8:30 AM, will take place at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center, Memorial Fountain on Sunday, September 11.  In addition to student artists, members of the Treasure Coast High School Symphonic Band will also participate in the ceremony.

When asked about the project, Superintendent E. Wayne Gent stated, “Our students are keenly aware of the importance of the events that occurred on 9/11, and this art project demonstrates a great depth of their understanding.”  The design for the project is a result of several artistic interpretations of this day in history.   According to eleventh grader Alivia Bienz, “9/11 to me is a day of great despair and of unity. In my painting, I wanted to depict the deep sorrow that civilians, first responders and people everywhere felt. This included the infamous dust clouds that swept through the city as the buildings collapsed. But in the light of all things, I put a sunrise behind the scene and the light beams from where the twin towers stood. The first responders and angel in the cloud formations act as guardians of the city. This was to symbolize the hope and unity that arose from the act of terrorism in all Americans that day. The towers are in almost a heavenly blue to give the feeling of peace and remembrance of all the lives lost that day.”
