Northport K-8 School Media Services is pleased and honored to welcome Bill Arnold, Northport’s Senior Volunteer of the Year and St. Lucie County School District Senior Volunteer of the Year for a special program for sixth graders on the Starfish team in the Media Center.  Mr. Arnold was selected to represent the school and the school district for his service to the school and to the students.  Mr. Arnold has served well over 4500 students and at least 800 parents and grandparents at 28 different school events.  As a veteran, Mr. Arnold has imparted a wealth of information to students … Read More

Sweet Elementary enjoy exercising during extended physical education time by playing Twister. Twister is a game that is sure to stretch the body and exercise every muscle. The state mandated several years ago that every student receive an additional thirty minutes of exercise and active play daily.

Can you guess the beautiful babies in Room 306? Every year the students in Barbara Whellams’ third grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary bring in baby pictures for the February bulletin board. Students Stoney Braynen, Olivia Sperber, and Will Nelson are having fun trying to guess their classmates and the one with the most correct matches, receives a surprise treat. It is not as easy as it might appear, so you must look closely.

What an accomplishment for fifth grade F.K. Sweet Elementary student, Jerry Miles Johnson III, in winning first place for four years in a row at the Martin Luther King Oratorical Contest recently held at Ft. Pierce Central High School. Jerry’s strong oratory focused on this year’s theme, Remember, Celebrate, and Take Action.

Southport Middle School’s Media Center held a movie and popcorn event for students who read and successfully tested over six or more Sunshine State Reader books.   Students received a paperback book of their choice, a poster and some Sunshine Reader pencils and bookmarks.   Pictured, from left, are Devyn Sarno, Brendan Gonzalez (the first student to have read all 15 books!), Alexis Leo, Jaycie Wegner,  Thao Phan, Vanessa Smith and Fabiola Barco-Garcia.

  Lisa Green’s second grade class at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed a popcorn party while watching a Magic School Bus video on energy.  All 17 students memorized their sight words for the quarter and were able to enjoy this special treat!

Students at Weatherbee Elementary are rising to the reading challenge set forth by the school’s Literacy Committee and we say, “Hats On” to them!  Pictured with Principal Michael Hitsman are students who have earned their Reading Challenge cap, which is worn on Fridays, as well as students who have continued on to earn shoe laces and buttons that they proudly display along with their hats each Friday.  Students are recognized on the Friday edition of the Weatherbee Morning Show so that the entire Weatherbee family can celebrate this milestone in reading for all students.  Way to go Mariners!

Weatherbee Elementary students participated in the school’s annual Spelling Bee recently.  Those who placed in the Spelling Bee are, from left,  Jessica Eastland, a fourth grade student taking third place, Britney Eliassaint, a fifth grade student taking second place and Alexa Torres, a fourth grade student gaining the first place position and serving as Weatherbee’s representative for the upcoming District Spelling Bee.

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition is proud to announce the middle school Spelling Bee winners.  The judges for this year’s competition were Alison Yano, Brandi Pagano, Andrea Tang and Debbie Hawley, St. Lucie County School Board vice chairman and chairperson for the FAU board.  The first place winner will compete in the district competition on February 22, 2012.  Pictured, from left, are first place winner Aishwarya Kalluri, second place Mackenzie Levin, and third place Renata Risi.    

St. Lucie Elementary recently held its school spelling bee.   Principal Bernadette Floyd, left, and Assistant Principal Nicole Ortega are pictured with the 2011-2012 Spelling Bee winners  Ruby Martinez, third place, Juan Fleites, first place, and Guadalupe Rubio, second place.

Thank you to the families and staff that participated in the Samuel Gaines Academy Literacy Night, parents learned about the 100 book challenge while the students picked out a book to read to their parents and also choose a book to take home to keep. The evening ended with a spaghetti dinner and door prizes.  Pictured is first grader Anthonia Hudson excitedly reading to her mother Lorraine Robinson while her brother, kindergartner Anthony Hudson II looks through his book.  

C.A. Moore Elementary School participated in Celebrate Literacy, Florida Week by community members coming into the school to read.   Each classroom had a community person read to the students.  The guest readers read the book, The Giving Tree and each class now has a copy of the book.  Ms. Felicia Nixon, principal made a special presentation on morning announcements.  Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll donated a book about Florida.  Her message to the students was to keep reading their 800 minutes per quarter and that she is proud of all of them.  The students are good readers now and are working to become … Read More

During Literacy Week at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition grades four, six, seven and eight competed in a door decorating contest.  The fourth grade classes did a Book Study as a guide for decorating their doors and the middle school classes used an Author Study for their doors.  Pictured here is the door decorating winner for Harry Potter as a Book Study from Ashley Rich’s fourth grade class.  Excellent!

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition seventh grade students placed second and third in the district Project Citizen Showcase.  Anne Lulkin’s class project titled “Tossing Salad in to Schools” placed second and Hillary Cruz’ class project “No Homework, No Stress, No Problems” placed third.  These projects will now go on to the state level of the competition and will be on display in the Capitol building in Tallahassee.  State legislators will judge the projects on February 10 and winners will go on to state finals in Orlando.  Great job Rockets!!

These middle school students from Sara Apostolico and Anne Lulkin’s classes helped the third graders read books.  All the students enjoyed the time together.

Kindergarten students enjoyed connecting literature across the curriculum. After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, the students learned sequencing, days of the week, and the butterfly life cycle. Students will proudly display their work on the kindergarten bulletin board. Seventh grade students in Christi Pittman’s classes at Allapattah Flats K-8 School are learning about the Civil Rights Movement in language arts.  After listening to Martin Luther King Junior’s “I Have a Dream” speech in its entirety, students were impressed with his eloquence and use of “big words.” Inspired, the students wrote their own “I Have a Dream” paragraph about what they would like to see changed in their community, state, country, or world. Allapattah Flats K8 first graders were treated to a special event after studying animals in science.  Cheryl Wise from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary educated first graders about Florida wildlife and habitats. First graders were able to touch an alligator, opossum, bofu frog, king snake and a skunk. Students beam, anxiously awaiting their turn to touch the bofu frog.  Pictured, from left, are Andre Hayle, Angelica Maldonado, Jaydin White, Enrique Mojica, and Courtney Waithe. They were also able to see an owl, compare and contrast features of an alligator to a crocodile, and visit with a tortoise. What a great day to be in first grade at Allapattah Flats K-8!

The Jaguar Battalion of Port St. Lucie High School participated in the recent parade honoring one of America’s greatest civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Jaguar Battalion stretched over two city blocks and received many accolades from the spectators. The Jaguar Battalion was a very notable feature of this parade. The battalion was led by the Battalion Commander, cadet Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Jacobson, followed by the battalion Color Guard, the battalion staff and the three companies.      The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion held its annual Military Ball recently. The Military Ball is an event which cadets participate in a formal dining in, followed by an informal dance. Cadets attending were greeted by the cadet leadership in the receiving line, led by cadet Lieutenant Colonel Jacobson and cadet Command Sergeant Major Propst. Many speeches followed, and the grog bowl ceremony took place afterwards.  The informal portion of the event followed the dinner. All of the cadets that attended had an outstanding time.
